ML+A earned first place in a competition to redesign farmer’s markets to ensure that food grown by local farmers is delivered and distributed to urban residents. The concept is called the “Farm On Wheels” program that distributes the produce through a network of farm trucks. The consumption of fresh foods supports local and urban agriculture by means of a convenient food distribution network between farmers and consumers.
Program goals include: equal access for all; fair price for both farmers and consumers; quality control; education through fresh food; healthy lifestyle awareness; offer an alternative food source; neighborhood services; centralize market increasing social interaction; reduced travel time for purchase; generate new green jobs; support local farming; and encourage urban agriculture.
A centralized farmer’s distribution market sends neighborhood farm trucks in a systemized distribution network designed to reach everyone in the city. These electric vehicles follow a predetermined route shopping at 4 to 5 scheduled locations per day, including schools, parks, metro stations and other convenient locations. The trucks can also join existing neighborhood Farmer’s Markets to inform people and farmers about the program, get feedback from the users, and distribute maps and schedules.
