A space that was the neglected pool deck of the historic Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, is now one of the hottest spots to see and be seen in Hollywood. ML+A was responsible for renovating and updating the cabana patios and the pool garden landscape, featuring a landmark David Hockney painted pool. The firm worked closely with the City Redevelopment Agency of the City of Los Angeles to ensure contemporary designs supported the historical elements of the hotel. Natural stone paving, tropical plants, fire bowls and chaise lounges are frequently inundated with minimally clad sun worshipers sipping cocktails at the pool side.
The overriding concept was to create a more relaxed and natural ambiance that embodies the modern California architecture and attitude of the cabana rooms. Peach stone paving and concrete pool coping were replaced with a beige flagstone for a more natural surface at the water’s edge. This graphic movement is reflected in the undulating pool coping which is in itself, a nod to Hockney’s unique pool painting. The cabana suite terraces emphasize L.A.’s indoor-outdoor lifestyle. With fire bowls for ambiance and warmth, these spaces become an enchanting outdoor lounge. The gardens recreate the ambiance of the heyday of Hollywood where anyone could be the next star.
