The Site design for the Village creates a sequence of public and private spaces that find their inspiration in the history of this site, the qualities of the Santa Monica coastal area and the scale of walk streets and humanly scaled open spaces found in nearby neighborhoods. The open spaces have been designed with a sustainable approach that utilizes natural and recycled materials, recalls the bluff that once occupied this site and creates a sense of human scale in the Living Street, Family Garden, Play area and Ocean Avenue Streetscape. The Village will serve a diverse community of immediate residents, the local ocean front neighborhood, the civic center workforce population and tourists. It will serve as the neighborhood meeting spot and for some may be their first experience of Coastal Santa Monica when their visit begins in the civic center area.
The Village will expand the historic pattern of small pedestrian streets connecting the City’s retail corridors to the beach south of the pier. The street will be lined with elevated planting areas which will provide front gardens for ground floor market rate units similar to those found on the neighboring walk streets. Site sustainability will also contribute to the integration of the site with the City’s unique fabric where a preference for a healthier environment and life style are tangible.
